Clay's email verification vs a dedicated verifier

Clay can validate emails for you, but its credits make each check expensive at list scale. Here's the arithmetic.

Updated 2026-10-30

TL;DR

  • A Clay-managed validation costs about $0.05-0.07 in Clay credits, based on Clay's published credit prices.
  • That's roughly 9-12 times Mail Exchange's 5K price ($0.0058) and 17-23 times its 100K price ($0.0030).
  • You can use your own verifier from a Clay table with an HTTP API column (paid plans), or export CSV and verify in bulk.
  • Clay's ZeroBounce action can use your own ZeroBounce key on paid plans, which avoids the Clay-credit price.

What Clay's validation costs

Clay prices work in data credits. Credit packs start at about $0.05 per credit, and on the Growth plan a credit works out near $0.074, so a managed validation lands at about $0.05-0.07. That's fine for a handful of high-value rows and painful for a 10,000-row table, where it comes to about $500-700.

Cost for a 10,000-row table

ApproachCost for 10,000 checks
Clay-managed validation (about $0.05-0.07 each)about $500-700
Mail Exchange via HTTP API column or CSV$49 (10K pack)
Mail Exchange 100K pack, if you verify more over time$299 ($0.0030 each)

Clay pricing recorded 2026-10-17 from its pricing page; credit cost depends on your plan. Mail Exchange prices are pay-as-you-go packs.

Three ways to verify in a Clay workflow

  1. HTTP API column. Call POST /api/v1/verify with the email column as the body. Clay's pricing page lists HTTP API integrations on the Growth and Enterprise plans. Details in the Clay integration guide.
  2. Export and re-import. Download the table as CSV, verify the file in bulk, and import the clean result. Works on any plan.
  3. Use your own key with a native action. Clay's ZeroBounce action accepts your own key on paid plans, which avoids Clay-credit pricing but not ZeroBounce's own rates.

Order of operations in a waterfall

In a Clay waterfall, enrichment providers fill the email column first. Verify after the waterfall has finished, once, on the final value: verifying every provider's result separately multiplies your cost. See verify before or after enrichment.

When Clay's own validation is fine

If you validate a few dozen emails a day and value having it in one table with no setup, paying the credit price buys convenience. Past a few thousand rows a month, a dedicated verifier pays for itself quickly.
