TL;DR
- Yahoo Mail is not documented as a catch-all. Its sender guidance covers a "recipient does not exist" error and says not to retry it.
- Yahoo also warns that sending to many unknown recipients can get you blocked, so probing and cold lists both need care.
- We expect deliverable or undeliverable results, and unknown when Yahoo defers or rate-limits.
The direct answer
yahoo.com, ymail.com and rocketmail.com are Yahoo's own consumer domains, so no customer can set a catch-all on them. Yahoo's error-code page for senders has a "Recipient does not exist" section. It says the account "does not exist" and that you should not retry delivery, and it describes 553 and 554 as permanent errors for causes including an invalid address (Yahoo sender hub: SMTP error codes, checked 2026-10-18).
That page lists no specific numeric code for the missing-recipient case, so we don't promise one. Third-party guides quote 554 ... This user doesn't have a yahoo.com account, but we couldn't confirm that wording from Yahoo itself.
Yahoo and unknown recipients
The same page has an "Excessive unknown recipients" section: sending to many invalid recipients can lead to blocks, so remove addresses that bounce. This is the reason to verify before sending to Yahoo users. It also covers temporary 421 and 451 replies caused by unusual traffic, complaints, busy servers or dynamic deprioritisation, which you may retry later.
Yahoo does not say whether it deliberately answers address probes differently. We found nothing on that, so we make no claim.
What you will typically see
The method is the same everywhere: we open an SMTP session with the domain's mail server, ask whether it will take mail for the address, ask the same about a random address that cannot exist, and never send the message (how it works).
| What the server says | Our result |
|---|---|
| Accepts the address, refuses the random test address | deliverable (risky: low_quality for role addresses such as info@) |
Refuses the address (550 5.1.1 or similar) | undeliverable: rejected_email |
Temporary 4xx answer (deferral, rate limit, greylisting) | unknown: unavailable_smtp after a later retry |
Refuses us for who we are (5.7.x, blocklist or policy text) | unknown: blocked_by_server |
A deferral is not a verdict. We retry deferred replies after a wait; if the answer is still temporary, the address is unknown and refunded. A reply that cites a blocklist is also unknown, because it describes our IP and not the mailbox. See bounce codes for how 4xx and 5xx differ.

Yahoo's sender page says sending to many invalid recipients can lead to blocks and advises removing addresses that bounce.
Should I retry a Yahoo 554?
Yahoo says not to retry permanent 5xx errors. Retry only temporary 421 or 451 replies.
