TL;DR
- Smartlead's verification add-on starts at $32 for 6,000 credits (about $0.0053 each). At 5,000 emails Mail Exchange is $29 ($0.0058), and below Smartlead's entry rate from 10,000 emails ($0.0049).
- It runs at CSV import only. Per Smartlead's help center, "You cannot verify leads once a campaign is live."
- Smartlead sends to valid and catch-all leads by default, so catch-all risk is yours to manage.
- Smartlead's bounce auto-protection is off unless you turn it on, and divides by total leads, not emails sent.
How Smartlead verification works
Smartlead's verifier is an add-on sold in credit packs from 6,000 up to 960,000, one-time or monthly (monthly is cheaper). It runs when you import a CSV; you can't re-verify leads inside a live campaign. Smartlead says it will send emails "only to valid and catch all leads", so catch-all addresses are included unless you remove them yourself. It doesn't name its provider and states a 99% accuracy figure that we can't verify.

Why the catch-all default matters
A catch-all domain accepts mail for any address, so a verifier can't prove a specific mailbox exists. Some catch-all addresses are real people and some are not. In one published test, accept-all addresses bounced 27% of the time against 1% for valid ones. Sending to every catch-all by default means a share of your list is a coin flip. With a dedicated verifier you can pull catch-alls into a separate file, send to a small slice and learn which of your domains are safe. See should you send to catch-alls.
Why timing matters
Lists age. Leads you verified at import three weeks ago can have changed jobs by the time step 3 of a sequence goes out. Because Smartlead verifies only at import, a re-check means exporting leads and re-importing them. A verifier you can call any time lets you re-verify before follow-ups.
The bounce brake
Smartlead's High Bounce Rate Auto Protection is off until you switch it on during campaign setup. Its formula divides bounces by total leads in the campaign rather than emails sent, so early in a big campaign the rate looks lower than it really is. Cleaning the list first is the safer protection.
